  • Capt. C.M. Grainger, war veteran

Irish-born Charles M. Grainger had served in the Crimean War as a teenager and was noted for his actions while Sergeant, Company B, 88th New York Infantry at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

His remarkable life is reviewed here in his obituary from the Brooklyn Eagle of 8 June 1915.

  • Captain/AAG commission of James B Turner

This commission, signed by President Lincoln and Secretary of War Stanton, promoted Lieutenant James B. Turner of the 88th New York Infantry to a Staff position in the US Volunteers.

After recovering from his Antietam wound, Captain Turner served on the staff of General Meagher’s Irish Brigade until his death in the Wilderness on 5 May 1864.

Known by his pen-name Gallowglass, Turner wrote extensively about the Brigade for the New York Irish American newspaper during the war.

  • G. A. Saxton

I shot this stone at the Antietam National Cemetery on 14 October 2021.

I believe it was meant for Private George W. Saxton, Company C, 128th Pennsyvania Infantry, who was killed in action at Antietam.  He also has a marker in the family plot in Union Cemetery, Richboro, PA [via Findagrave], so I expect he’s not actually under this stone.

  • Asher Waterman Harman

This is a photograph of Asher W. Harman who was Colonel of the 12th Virginia Cavalry on the Maryland Campaign of 1862. It’s from descendent Li Harman who posted it to Asher’s Findagrave memorial.

  • A.C.M. Pennington

Lieutenant Alexander Cummings McWhorter Pennington commanded a section of Captain Tidball’s Battery A, 2nd US Artillery at Antietam in September 1862. This fine carte-de-visite of him is courtesy of Jim Rosebrock, from his collection.
