Walter M. “Watt” Bryson was fresh out of medical school at the start of the war and by April 1862 was Captain of Company G of the 35th North Carolina Infantry. He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September, and George Mills, his slave/body servant, got his body home for burial. 60 years later, in 1923, his iron casket was dug up and reinterred in a new cemetery.
