a companion to Antietam on the Web

Sgt Henry Lange (c. 1900)

German-born Sergeant Henry Lange of the 27th Indiana Infantry was wounded by a piece of shell to his right shoulder at Antietam on 17 September 1862, but survived that and the war. He went to California by 1875 and ran the Grand Hotel in St. Helena in the Napa Valley. From 1885 to at least 1905 his Olive Hill winery produced as many as 80,000 gallons of wine a year.

His photograph is from Wallace’s History of Napa Valley (1901).
